Today is our provincial election. I didn't know that.
I knew it was coming; I thought there was more time to go.
You know who knew? Our friends who arrived SUNDAY from ESTONIA. They knew it was today. But I didn't believe it, really.
Now I might not be able to vote.
How the heck are we supposed to know? I didn't even know an election was CALLED - even though I saw signs everywhere, thinking it was advance campaigning - until someone mentioned it in passing.
Some of us do not have/watch tv, and don't like/read the trashy local newspapers. You cannot rely on media alone to inform us of things.
I'm voting GREEN PARTY if I make it to the polls.
You can indeed vote!
Polls are open until 8pm. Just show up with two pieces of ID that, combined, show your name, address and signature. Tell them you're not registered yet when you show up, and they'll point you in the right direction.

I'm working until 4:30, and then again from 5:30 to 10:30 at the coffee shop. I'd have to get off my day job early and hope that they'd take my marriage cert plus address ID with my husband's name on it since I still don't have any.
See? Not easy. I'll try.

Plus, my husband is in the US with the car, and there are long line ups to vote in the West End. I think I'm sol.

From elections.bc.ca...
Any employee who is entitled to vote is entitled to have four consecutive hours free from employment during voting hours on General Voting Day for the purpose of voting. Voting hours on May 17, 2005 are 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Pacific Daylight time.
It is up to the employer to determine when any necessary time is to be taken off work to vote. Time off may be at the beginning or end of an employee’s shift, or unnecessary if normal working hours already provide the necessary time free from employment. It is an offence for an employer to take any deduction from an employee's pay, or exact any other penalty, for time off for voting.
Free paid time off! Whee.

Sounds like a tricky timing predicament indeed... Hopefully you can make it, or the coffee shop will understand if you're a smidge late.
Good on ya' for trying though! Too many people I know have oodles of time and won't bother anyway.
